A fan's happy problem
After the Avengers tourbillons, Memorigin returned to Disney, this time with Lucasfilm, and asked Mark Lui, the Hong Kong composer and designer, to lead the design. As a Star Wars fan he was thrilled, then stuck: with so many characters worth a watch, choosing was the hard part. A happy problem, as he saw it.

Chrome, in a few clean lines
Phasma opened the series. Mark Lui sketched her helmet in a few simple lines and set black film where her visor sits, so the movement glints through. Black, white, red and silver carry the Star Wars palette, and the black-and-red tyre-tread strap is a quiet signal only fans will read.

December 2016 · The dark side
A hero sealed behind a mask
Of all the characters, Mark Lui found Vader the most compelling: a Jedi hero turned by the dark side, his conscience sealed behind a mask. The watch is black throughout. The tourbillon shows through the mouth of the mask, a TIE fighter tells the hour and Vader's red lightsaber the minute.

In Vader's shadow
Kylo Ren idolises Vader and is drawn to the Force, but his temper runs darker, his power hidden under a cloak. Mark Lui redrew the mask for the dial and had a nylon strap made to echo the cloak. His crossguard lightsaber is the minute hand; a TIE fighter keeps the hour.

December 2016 · The loyal droid
Ready for launch
George Lucas's droids shaped how science fiction imagines machines, and Mark Lui wanted to honour them. He chose R2-D2, the loyal ally against the dark side, and drew him as he looks from above when seated in an X-wing: his dome becomes the dial, and the tourbillon glows through a blue filter.

For the collector
May the Force be with you
Each box carries the story on. Phasma's glossy white wooden case recalls a Stormtrooper and hides “May the Force be with you” on Mark Lui's nameplate. The 2016 pieces arrive in space-capsule boxes with a round window: black on black for Vader, First Order red and black for Kylo Ren, silver and blue for R2-D2.
