An NBA All-Star didn’t endorse a watch. He started a watch brand with a Hong Kong watchmaker, and put his own tattoos on the dial.

Memorigin is a watch brand devoted entirely to the tourbillon. Every piece is assembled by hand.

He never met the watchmaker

The US shoot: a few hours carved out of a packed season.

In 2021 the pandemic kept William Shum, Memorigin’s founder, from flying to the United States. So LaMelo Ball built his first watch over video calls, and gave notes on it from the first drawing to the finished piece.

His first tattoo, FEAR and GOD, runs across a graffiti skeleton dial beside a doodle of his name, his silhouette in profile, and the winged 1 that marks him as the Golden Child. The flying tourbillon at six o’clock turns once a minute.

The inner bezel comes in the purple and teal of his Charlotte jerseys, or his own red, brown and white. A skeleton basketball dial shows the movement, and the orange seconds hand carries his number 1 at its tail. Straps change without tools.
