In Chinese art, poems and drawings always merge into one. In other words, they can be seen together on a piece of paper to represent different inspirations and scenery. However, artists often come up with new ideas which require them to make a breakthrough in the field so that they can produce satisfying artwork. Ray Lui Leung-wai, the famous Hong Kong actor, has been successful in his acting career. Despite the challenge of playing different characters, his innovations and talents have not only made the leading roles lively and well-known, but also helped him create various marvelous drawings which use animals as the theme. Amongst all, the color-painted rooster is the most vivid. The Auspicious Rooster is his favorite drawing, and it raised a fund of 1 million Hong Kong dollars in a charitable event.

In 2017, Mr. Ray Lui hopes to make a breakthrough in his artistic career. He thinks of using watches instead of paper to show the inspirations of his artwork in more dimensions. Therefore, he collaborates with Memorigin, the Hong Kong tourbillon watch brand, to design a series of innovative and conceptual tourbillon watches. This is also the first series of products of his personal brand ‘RayLui’. The Ray Lui Series – Auspicious Rooster Tourbillon has 3 dial designs, and they are all the drawings of Mr. Ray Lui – Power Wing, Life Color, and Fullness, turning the watch into an art piece. Many people agree that innovation is an important element in the design, but it requires more when it comes to bringing freshness and making a breakthrough. Mr. Ray Lui focuses on the expression of colors in his creation, therefore the tourbillon craftsmen need to consider how to perfectly present the drawings on the dial. To represent the layers of feathers on the rooster’s wings, the craftsmen use mother of pearl as the raw material. The unique pattern and color of the mother of pearl blend well with the drawings. The style of the drawing remains, but the colorful rooster is lively and detailedly presented. The rooster stares fiercely at the flying tourbillon rotating on the 6 o’clock position, and the sound of the rotation is like the roosters pecking at the stones. When the traditional Chinese ink-painting collaborates with the modern watch craftsmanship, the product presents the beauty of historical romantic Chinese art.

There are more than a hundred pieces of diamond on the dials of the three tourbillon watches in the series, and they surround the watch case regularly to focus all the attention on the dial. The use of diamond represents elegance, luxury, and a sense of artistic anima. The diamonds are strictly selected and purchased from South Africa. They are processed by skillful and experienced craftsmen. It takes months from selection to embedment to finish one watch. The color options of the diamonds range from G to H, and the purity reaches VVS. They are polished and embedded on the pure gold watch case by the craftsmen manually. When the lights are transmitted through the watch, the reflection of lights on the diamonds and the golden watch case adds more glowing color to it. In some grand occasions, the alligator strap can make the watch more stylish. Memorigin specially chooses a tourbillon movement with 40 hours of power reserve and rotates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. The flying tourbillon on 6 o’clock position rotates at a speed of the 60s for one circle. To cater for female customers, the craftsmen produce the watch with an off-center tourbillon that offers 60 hours of power reserve. With the pink alligator strap, the watch looks more feminine and adorable.

Its attraction is undeniable when the watch is combined with art. Mr. Ray Lui is so kind and generous that he has helped numerous charitable organizations. Even in this collaboration, he insists on doing philanthropy and helping the needy. Mr. Ray Lui fully support the Teach for China project and the Ebenezer School & Home for the Visually Impaired. Not only is he helping the children in rural regions improve the educational quality, but he is also supporting the service for the visually impaired so that they can develop their talents. A part of the profits will be donated to both organizations under the name of Ray Lui Charity Fund to arouse public awareness on the disabilities and the underprivileged.
